QUESTIONS

1. TELL US IN BRIEF ABOUT YOUR VISUAL LANGUAGE OF PAINTING IN THE PHOTO NEGATIVE STYLE.

Since the photonegative style of painting abstracts detail, it therefore assists in imparting a strong historical resonance and simplifies the manifestation of the neglected social class, i.e. of street vendors. It also allies with the tradition of image making; one that combines the skepticism of media-derived images with an actual inversion of the documentary mode of recording facts.

2. HOW DO YOU CHOOSE TO PAINT A THEME? WHAT ARE YOUR INSPIRATIONS IN SELECTING THE THEME?

I spend most of the time in three cities of India- Mumbai, Jaipur & Sikar. In these cities, I have seen footpath bazaars (street vendors and hawkers) dominating every urban and semi urban landscape. All these three cities may have lot of differences but the visuals of Bazaar resemble each other. I examine the visual culture of these bazaars and then make them the theme of my work. My aesthetics delineates the complex inter–relations of India’s urban & semi urban scenario.

3. YOUR PAINTINGS ARE AN INTERESTING MIX OF INDIAN THEMES AND A CONTEMPORARY STYLE OF PAINTING. IS THIS INTENTIONAL?

Yes, I prefer to visually project my art in a contemporary style. As could also be seen in the chosen theme of my work wherein, I prefer to juxtapose the contemporary scenario of the bazaars on the decorative motifs floating in the background that come from the painted fresco on the Havelis (Mansion) of Shekhavati, my hometown where I had spent my childhood.

4. WHAT IS THE PROCESS YOU FOLLOW AS YOU BEGIN A PAINTING?

The incorporated images are the photographs taken by me. I digitally modify these photographs and then transfer them on canvas. The treatment of pictures has a simplistic approach. I use layers of vibrant colors that simply have strong individual personas expressing a subtle theatre of visual form. I employs ‘acrylic’ colors to create this vibrancy and for their ability to dry quickly.
